FAQ

Everything you need to know about Mercanis

What is Mercanis?
Mercanis is an AI procurement platform that covers the full source-to-pay (S2P) process in one system: intake, sourcing, supplier management, contracts, spend analytics and procure-to-pay (P2P). Built in Berlin, it is used by more than 120 companies from mid-market to enterprise. Mercu, the procurement agent inside Mercanis, takes on the routine work so your buyers can focus on negotiations, suppliers and strategy.
What is a procurement agent?
A procurement agent is AI software that carries out procurement tasks the way an experienced buyer would. It prepares RFQs, compares bids, checks suppliers and gets negotiations ready. In Mercanis, this procurement agent is called Mercu. Mercu follows Skills, which are plain-language playbooks written by your buyers and our procurement experts, so it works the same way every time. Your team stays in charge of approvals and award decisions.
Will AI make purchasing decisions without my team?
No. Mercu does the groundwork, but approvals, award decisions and invoice release stay with people. You define in your workflows what the procurement agent may handle on its own and where a buyer has to sign off. Every AI action is logged and can be traced afterwards, including which steps were taken and who approved the result.
Does Mercanis cover direct and indirect procurement?
Yes. For indirect spend, requests come in as free text, from a catalogue or against a framework agreement, and simple demands run through Sourcing Skills in minutes. For direct materials, Mercanis supports complex sourcing events with RFI, RFP and RFQ, bid scoring, scenario analysis, negotiation and award. Both run on the same AI procurement platform, with one supplier base and one set of data.
What is the difference between source-to-pay (S2P) and procure-to-pay (P2P)?
Source-to-pay (S2P) covers the entire procurement cycle: spend analysis, sourcing, supplier management, contracts, ordering, invoicing and payment. Procure-to-pay (P2P) is the operational part of it, from purchase requisition and purchase order through goods receipt to invoice and payment. Mercanis covers both, so the supplier and price you negotiated in sourcing flow straight into the purchase order without entering data twice.
Which industries does Mercanis work with?
Mercanis is used by procurement teams in automotive, manufacturing, chemicals and pharma, energy and utilities, construction and engineering, and consumer goods. Typical use cases include direct sourcing, quick RFQs, supplier qualification and onboarding, supplier risk and contract management. Each customer works with procurement experts who know the requirements of their industry.
How long does it take to implement Mercanis?
On average 30 days from kick-off to go-live. Forward deployed engineers connect Mercanis to your existing systems, solution consultants configure the platform around your processes, and product success managers lead the rollout with your team. They stay with you after go-live as well. Because the platform is modular, you can start with one area such as sourcing or procure-to-pay (P2P) and expand from there.
Does Mercanis work with SAP and our existing ERP?
Yes. Mercanis runs alongside your ERP, including SAP and NetSuite, as well as tools like Microsoft Teams, Outlook and Slack. Your ERP stays the system of record for finance, while Mercanis covers the source-to-pay (S2P) process on top of it and exchanges data through integrations. There is no replacement project and no need to rip out what already works.
Is Mercanis secure and GDPR compliant?
Yes. Mercanis runs an information security management system certified to ISO 27001:2022 and is AICPA SOC 2 certified. Customer data is hosted on AWS in Frankfurt, Germany, and processed in line with GDPR under a data processing agreement with every customer. You decide which AI models are approved, every AI action is logged, and hosting can be tailored to your data requirements.
